What It Really Takes to Market a Destination
Destination marketing takes more than scenic drone footage, polished photography, and a list of local attractions. To inspire someone to visit a place they may have never considered, you have to give them a reason to stop scrolling, become curious, and start planning a trip.
That was the challenge when OOT Box Media partnered with the Logan County Tourism Bureau on a three-month digital marketing campaign targeting Midwestern road-trippers.
The results spoke for themselves.
Over the course of the campaign, Logan County Tourism generated nearly 2 million impressions, reached almost 600,000 people, earned more than 362,000 video views, and drove 9,919 link clicks, resulting in 5,529 confirmed website visits.
More importantly, the campaign reinforced something we see across many industries: people connect with stories, not lists of attractions.
A Destination Marketing Strategy With a Clear Purpose
One of the biggest mistakes in destination marketing is trying to accomplish everything with a single piece of content.
A commercial that tries to feature every town, restaurant, park, attraction, and event often ends up saying very little. While the goal may be to represent everyone, the message can become too broad for people to remember.

Instead, we built the Logan County campaign around three clear objectives:
Brand awareness
Social media engagement
Website traffic
Each piece of content had one specific job.
The primary Logan County video introduced new audiences to the destination and generated more than 470,000 impressions.
Town-specific Reels highlighted individual communities and gave viewers reasons to keep watching, while traffic-focused ads encouraged interested travelers to learn more and begin planning their trips.
By separating awareness, engagement, and website traffic into distinct campaign objectives, the campaign generated 9,919 link clicks and 5,529 confirmed website visits.
Using a Hero Video to Build Awareness
The primary Logan County video served as the campaign’s top-of-funnel awareness piece, introducing the destination as an easy and approachable Midwest road trip.
The video generated more than 470,000 impressions and placed Logan County in front of travelers who may not have previously considered it a place to visit.
From there, town-specific Reels built on that awareness by highlighting the stories, history, and attractions that gave viewers more concrete reasons to explore.
Why Town-Specific Content Performed Better
One of the biggest reasons the campaign succeeded was its focus on individual communities instead of broad destination messaging.
Rather than repeatedly promoting Logan County as a whole, we created content around the stories that made each town memorable.
Atlanta highlighted Route 66 nostalgia and small-town charm. Middletown connected visitors to Abraham Lincoln's history. Elkhart stood out because of its unusual geography, including one of the highest points in Illinois rising unexpectedly from the prairie.
Those stories gave people something specific to remember.
Instead of generic messaging such as "there's something for everyone," viewers discovered interesting places they may have never heard of before. History hooks, local quirks, and hidden gems turned social media posts into recommendations people wanted to share.
Short-Form Video Led the Logan County Tourism Campaign
Video became the campaign's strongest-performing content format. Four of the five top-performing ads used video, with town-specific Reels consistently delivering some of the campaign’s strongest engagement and website traffic.
The Atlanta Reel became the campaign's top website traffic driver, generating 7,952 link clicks and 5,527 confirmed website visits. The Middletown Reel produced the strongest video engagement, while the Elkhart Reel earned some of the highest numbers of reactions and shares.
The takeaway was simple. People responded to content built around one location, one story, and one compelling reason to visit. That didn't mean every successful post had to be a Reel.
The Emden photo carousel reached more than 231,000 people, demonstrating that different content formats can serve different purposes within the same campaign. While video drove engagement and website traffic, photo content helped maximize overall reach.
Paid Advertising Supported Long-Term Organic Growth
One of the most encouraging results from the campaign happened after people saw the ads.
The campaign generated 453 shares, allowing people to introduce Logan County to friends and family through their own networks. During the same three-month period, the Facebook page gained 310 new followers, creating a larger audience for future content.
Compared to the previous quarter:
Page views increased by 1,869%
Link clicks increased 3,954%
Compared to the same period one year earlier:
Page views increased 2,197%
Content interactions increased 2,611%
New page follows increased 1,140%
These results show that paid advertising can do more than drive immediate clicks. When strong creative is paired with the right campaign strategy, it can also expand organic reach, grow an audience, and create momentum long after the campaign ends.
What Tourism Organizations Can Learn From This Campaign
Every destination has stories worth telling. The challenge is choosing the right ones. Based on this campaign, we would encourage tourism organizations to focus on three principles:
Tell One Story at a Time
Instead of trying to showcase everything your community offers, build each piece of content around one attraction, historical connection, local business, or unexpected fact.
Create Content for Social Media
People scroll differently than they watch television. Vertical video, strong opening hooks, authentic storytelling, and content designed specifically for social platforms often perform better than repurposed commercials.
Build Campaigns With Clear Goals
Brand awareness, engagement, and website traffic each require different creative and different advertising objectives. Giving every campaign one clear purpose produces stronger overall results.
More Than Great Content
One of the reasons this campaign was successful is that it was not built around a single service. It combined campaign strategy, video production, photography, graphic design, short-form social media content, paid advertising, and performance reporting into one cohesive marketing effort.
Each element supported the next, helping move potential travelers from discovering Logan County to exploring the website and planning a visit. When creative services and digital strategy work together, the result is a campaign that's stronger than any one tactic on its own.
Strategy Before Content
Every client has different goals, audiences, and challenges. That's why we do not believe in one-size-fits-all marketing.
Whether we're promoting a tourism destination, helping a business generate leads, or building awareness for a nonprofit, we start with strategy. From there, we build the right combination of creative services, digital advertising, and content to achieve measurable results.
At the end of the day, great marketing isn't about using every tactic. It's about using the right ones.
Every Community Has a Story Worth Sharing
The Logan County campaign reinforced something we believe at OOT Box Media. The best marketing doesn't create a story that isn't there. It uncovers what already makes a place, business, or organization worth paying attention to.
When thoughtful strategy, compelling storytelling, and targeted digital advertising work together, even smaller communities can reach hundreds of thousands of people and create measurable results.
That's the kind of opportunity we look for in every campaign.
